Travel with our Yangtze cruise to explore the breath-taking Three Gorges,
the natural beauty of the virgin forest of the Shennong Stream a chance
to encounter its mysterious Big Foot, the equally perilous and impressive
Three Little Gorges and the world famous Three Gorges Dam. The route was
designed especially for you to explore fully, extensively and never
before witness the wonders of nature within the limited short time. You
will leave enlightened after the encounter with Mother Nature.
Most cruise tours start from Chongqing and operate along the
Chongqing-Yichang stretch; some go as far as Wuhan. They dock at main
cities for the tourists to go ashore for short visits. Which cities to
dock and the duration of visits ashore differ with different cruise tours.
Chongqing to Wanxian
The cruise starts at Chongqing, the biggest city in Southwest China and
key port of departure and destination for Yangtze River cruises. For the
first few hours the banks of the river are lined with factories, but this
gives way to some pretty, green countryside with terraced fields, dotted
occasionally with small towns.
The first stop is the town of Fengdu. It is thronged with tourists who
come to visit temples and shrines dedicated to the gods of the nether
world. There are many horrifying and intimidating statues of demons and
devils inside temples. Landmarks there bear names that associated with
Hell - names like 'Last Glance at Home Tower', 'Nothing-to-be-done
Bridge' and 'Ghost Torturing Pass' - the three check points for ghosts
passing to the nether world.
Next stop is Zhongxian County The city got its name by touching heroic
story Shibaozhai of two patriots. There is a twelve-storeyed wooden red
pavilion near the town. It represents a fine classic design of Chinese
architecture, which you shall see more of them as the journey progresses.
Next is the large town of Wanxian, the commercial port where many cargo
boats anchored for the night. It is an important hub for goods
distribution in the area.

Wanxian to Yichang
Boats depart Wanxian before dawn and arrive at Fengjie town before
entering the gorges. This ancient town was the capital of the state of
Kui during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods from 722 to
221 BC. The town is a very lively town thronged with Chinese tourists who
come to visit the nearby famous historical site Baidi Cheng.
The spectacular Three Gorges - Qutang, Wu and Xiling, start just after
Fengjie and end near Yichang, is a stretch of about 200 kolimeters. The
gorges vary from 300 meters at their widest to less than 100 meters at
their narrowest. Here the Yangtze carves its way through the gorge
between the sheer precipices on both sides.
In between the Qutang and Wu gorges, most boats will stop for five to six
hours for passengers to experience river drifting through the Little
Three Gorges of Da'ning River in sampans. It is an experience of a
lifetime and should not be missed! These little gorges are much narrower
than their larger counterparts The Three Gorges, here you have the chance
to go ashore to take a view the rock formations up close.
The Three Gorges
The Three Gorges are full of dangerous rapids and turbulent current. The
first is Xiling Gorge starts at Badong County meandering for seventy six
kilometers (forty seven mile) downstream to the Nanjin Pass in Yichang.
It is the longest section of the Three Gorges with many dangerous rapids.
Here you should not miss another river drifting to Shennong Stream
(usually an alternative for the Little Three Gorges drift), here you find
the virgin forest where stories of Big Foot aplenty and a chance to spot
It.
Near the end of the gorge is Nanjin Pass - the ancient garrison of Liu
Bei, King of Shu of the Three Kingdom Period. After Najin Pass the river
widens abruptly and the next stop is the industrial town of Yichang. Its
history can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms Period, as early as 278
B.C. it was once a strategic point where battles after battles were
engaged between Shu and the Wu kingdoms. Cruise ships frequently stop at
Yichang for a brief excursion to Gezhouba Dam and the Three Gorges Dam.

Yichang to Wuhan
From Yichang, the next stop is Shashi. Some 7.5 kilometers from Shashi is
an ancient town - Jingzhou. Its ancient walled city still remains and now
there is a museum displaying all ancient relics excavated in the area and
should not be missed. After Jingzhou the river widens immensely and you
can hardly see the river shore-line. The boat continues down the river to
pass by (and possibly stop at) the town of Chengling, where the Yangtze
joins the famous Dongting Lake.
East of Dongting Lake is the town of Yueyang. Another nine hours will
bring you to Wuhan, where the Yangtze River cruise ends. Certain cruise
will go further east to Jiujiang City, where tourists can visit the
famous Mt. Lushan.
