China's crude oil import hits record high in 2004

Chinanews, Feb. 3 - According to customs statistics, the import volume of
China's crude oil increased 34.8% to 120 million tons in 2004, which is
the highest growth rate in the past four years. The value of imported
crude oil totaled 33.91 billion US dollars, up 71.4%. The international
price of crude oil registered a series of new highs last year, with an
average increase of 58.9 US dollars for every ton of imported crude oil.
As a result, there was altogether an extra cost of 7.068 billion US
dollars for the amount of crude oil imported last year.
China imported crude oil from more than 20 countries in 2004. The import
volume from 5 of these countries was more than 10 million tons each, with
a combined total of 73.72 million tons, accounting for 60% of the total
import volume in 2004. The Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia and
Oman were the top two suppliers, respectively exporting 17.24 million
tons and 16.35 million tons of crude oil to China. Angora and Iran were
in third and fourth places. Crude oil import from Russia saw the fastest
growth, doubling to 10.77 million tons, putting it in fifth place.
Imports from Sudan and the other 15 countries respectively ranged from
one million to ten million tons, with imports from Vietnam and Congo
showing the fastest relative growth.
In the same year, China imported 37.88 million tons of refined oil, up
34.1%. The value of the import is 9.25 billion US dollars, up 57.7%. The
total import value of crude oil and refined oil reached 43.16 billion US
dollars, making it the single product with the largest import value.
