Wikipedia access in China

Access to Wikipedia is notoriously "unstable" for reasons we all know. Here is how to read
Wikipedia in China: In the list below, some sites don't block "senitive keywords", the site will
still show "Connection was reset" if these words appear on the page you load.

Miniwiki.org - Fast, targeted for searching non-politics content.
Gollum Browser - read-only Wikipedia browser from Germany.
Google translated - Read through Google Translate, although layout is wiped out.

Other than the proxified sites above, you can also use GPRS-enabled mobile phone (or normal
Internet Explorer ) to read Wikipedia:

m.miniwiki.org - Fast and multi-lingual search. Certain keywords are blocked.
Wapedia - Well-organized mobilized Wiki, although the page break (up to 50pages.) can be quite
annoying.
Official WAP Wikipedia - English only. Good for less powerful GPRS phones

Asexual marriage bothers highly-educated women

www.chinanews.cn 2006-07-12 09:09:20

Chinanews, Chongqing, July 11 C A website on asexual marriage was
recently launched in Chongqing municipality. After it was opened, many
people logged onto the website. In just ten days, 400 people registered
as subscribers on the website, 60% of them women.
Last Sunday, 20 people considered as belonging to the asexual group
gathered in Tieshanping, in Jiangbei district of Chongqing. Most of them
were married. Among these people, 30% were couples that came together. At
the gathering, the organizer invited psychological doctors to teach them
how to maintain their marriage in asexual status.
The most active members at the meeting were not those unmarried people
who came there looking for partners, but the couple themselves. From
appearance, they look just the same as any couples. They talk and chat,
and even have some intimate behaviors, said the organizer.
The website was created by a person surnamed Peng who works in the
psychological field. He said that apart from physical, psychological
defects, and a dull relationship between husband and wife, asexual
marriages were mainly caused by too much work pressure for the husband
and wife to devote their time to maintaining their marriage.
Asexual marriage is not a sin but the couple should face it with a
positive attitude. If they dont communicate with each other,
misunderstanding will arise between the couple and overnight romance will
come about, said Peng. By launching the website, Mr. Peng said that he
hoped that more people involved in asexual marriage would be able to find
their suitable marriage partner and couples could shake off the asexual
status as soon as possible.
At present, most people that have asexual marriage are the highly
educated group. Among them, there are teachers, officials, white collar
workers, etc. For many, their asexual marriages are caused by post-natal
factors instead of physical defects or a sudden incident.
According to sociologists, apart from diseases or sudden changes, couples
that do not have any sexual relationships with each other for a month are
involved in an asexual marriage relationship.

DNA detects foreign labor in a terra-cotta warriors pit

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-29 16:37:36

Chinanews, Xi'an, Jun. 29 C By using DNA testing methods, Chinese
archeologists announced yesterday that they had discovered some human
remains in a terra-cotta warriors pit that showed traits of people living
in western Euro-Asian region some 2,200 years ago. The human remains were
found to be laborers of the Qingshihuang Mausoleum.
So far, ten cases have been discovered in the world showing traits of
people identified as the western Euro-Asian T group. They were the
Parsis people who believed in Zoroastrianism religion, the Persian people
and the Kurdish people. The discovery of the human remains in the
Qingshihuang Mausoleum indicated that way back in the Western Han
Dynasty, the Asian people and western Euro-Asian people had already kept
in close contact with each other, or even had gene exchanges.
This is the first time China discovered that foreign laborers had come to
China some 2,200 years ago, said Duan Qingbo, head of the Qingshihuang
Mausoleum archeological research team and research fellow from the
Shannxi Institute of Archeology.
According to Tan Jingze, associate professor from the Modern Anthropology
Research Center of the Shanghai-based Fudan University, said that from
ethnic point of view, western Euro-Asian people are Europeans. She said
that before Qinshihuang founded the Qin Dynasty, large-scale exchanges
between different ethnic groups was very rare, although occasional
exchange might have been possible.
Tan presumed that the foreign laborer discovered in the Qingshihuang
Mausoleum might have been among those pressganged into corvee labor.
Although genetic test showed that he had western Euro-Asian traits, he
might not be the first generation to come there. Right now, it was still
unclear which generation he belonged to.
The tomb where the foreign laborer remains were discovered is located 500
meters away from the Qingshihuang Mausoleum Museum. The Qingshihuang
Mausoleum archeological research team happened to discover the remains
when they were doing some cleaning work at an ancient kiln site near the
Qingshihuang Mausoleum. A total of 121 human bodies were excavated inside
the tomb, all being builders of the mausoleum. Archeologists have done
DNA tests to 50 human remains inside the tomb.

China to raise two proposals on SCO summit

www.chinanews.cn 2006-06-14 15:32:01

Chinanews, Beijing, June 14 (By Yu Lan) - The Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) will convene its sixth summit in Shanghai on June 15.
It was learned from China's Ministry of Commerce that in order to further
promote the development of the SCO's regional economic cooperation, China
will raise two proposals at the meeting.
A relevant official from the Ministry of Commerce said that China's first
proposal is to conduct joint research on the long-term development goals
to explore commonly accepted development modes of regional economic
cooperation.
The official pointed out that it has huge potential to propel in-depth
the process of integration in the region. If member countries can
eliminate non-tariff and tariff barriers amongst each other, they can
strengthen their economic relations through the free circulation of goods
and moreover, a unified market, which covers three fifths of Eurasia and
takes up one fourth of the total population of the world, will form. This
will help absorb capital, expertise and management experience within the
region and therefore further drive the economic development of each
country. In addition, considering the long-term development of regional
economic cooperation, regarding the establishment of free trade areas as
a long-term goal is an objective need to deal with economic globalization
and seek mutual development of member countries, in accordance with the
interests of each SCO party.
China's second proposal is to strengthen, with an open attitude, contact
and cooperation with international organizations and financial
institutions, in an effort to create favorable conditions for the
deepening of regional economic cooperation.
China believes that SCO's regional economic cooperation has large demand
for capital and expertise. The SCO should stick to the principle of
opening to reinforce contact with international organizations and
financial institutions, such as the Eurasian Economic Community, the
Asian Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme and
to take advantage of their rich experience, capital and expertise, in
order to create good conditions for deepening economic cooperation within
the region.

A visitor was carefully watching the sun-bird gold accessory in Beijing
on June 5. On that day, the sun-bird gold accessory, which came out of
Sichuan Province for the first time, showed up at the special exhibition
for the Cultural Heritage Day held in the National Museum of China in
Beijing. The sun-bird gold accessory was unearthed at Jinsha Ruins
located in Sichuan's Chengdu City and is the prototype of the symbol of
China's Cultural Heritage Day. It was learned that this special
exhibition showcased more than 100 precious cultural relics the People's
Republic of China collected from folk and overseas holders with special
funds since its foundation in 1949.

More women infected by AIDS in Yunnan

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-16 17:04:59

Chinanews, Kunming, May 16 C An international seminar titled
Preventing AIDS: Sharing the Experience and Reflecting on It was
recently held in southwest China's Yunnan province. Participants of the
seminar blamed unprotected sexual intercourse as the main reason for the
fast increase of the AIDS-infected women in Yunnan.
According to an official from the Yunnan Public Health Office attending
the seminar, there are some changes in the way people are infected by
AIDS virus in Yunnan: the number of women infected by the AIDS virus has
increased drastically in recent years and the ratio of women infected to
that of men has increased from 1:9 in the 1990s to the present 1:3. While
drug injection still accounts for 65% of the total infection cases,
infection through sexual intercourse has increased rapidly, from 0.4% in
the early 1990s to the present 12%.
AIDS has been prevalent in Yunnan for over 16 years and Yunnan is
considered as a place most seriously hit by the disease. It is reported
that at least 80,000 people have been infected by the disease in the
province and the disease shows signs of being spread from a small
high-risk group to ordinary people. Experts predict that the disease
might reach its peak period in 2007.

Householder spreads knowledge of law

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-11 16:25:57

A householder in Liujiahan Village of Hunan's Shaoyang County was
spreading knowledge of law door to door on May 10 to build a harmonious
new village. The village used to be known for disorder. In early 2002,
the county's civil affairs and discipline supervision departments
organized the village to publicize its administration and set up a
council to discuss and comment on administrative affairs. In the past two
years, the village kept its administration open to local residents and
the villagers abided by laws. Recently, the village was honored as a
model of democracy and the rule of law by Hunan provincial civil affairs
and judicatory departments.

Parliamentarians urged to build harmonious world

www.chinanews.cn 2006-05-09 09:02:59

(Source: Xinhua)

NAIROBI, May 9 - A key Chinese lawmaker on Monday urged world
parliamentarians to build a harmonious world through taking an active
part in international affairs at the 114th Inter-Parliamentary Union
(IPU) assembly held in Nairobi.
Cheng Siwei, the vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National
People's Congress (NPC) of China, told world parliamentarians that peace
and development are the two major issues of the times and mankind has a
long way to go in addressing them. He urged parliamentarians to work hard
to build a harmonious world of enduring peace and common prosperity.
"With global industrial restructuring and accelerated flow and transfer
of production factors, countries are linked by ever closer economic ties
and greater interdependence. World economic development is now in an
important period of opportunities," Cheng said in general debate on the
political, economic and social situation in the world.
"At the same time, considerable destabilizing and uncertain factors and
traditional security threats still exist, and nontraditional security
threats, such as terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,
pollution, natural disasters and infectious diseases, have become
prominent. The negative impact of economic globalization is more evident
and the North-South gap is widening," said the leader of the Chinese
delegation to the IPU assembly.
Cheng asked his colleagues all over the world to try their best to make
true the dream of harmonious world.
"We, parliamentarians of all countries, should not only pay attention to
domestic issues but also set our sights on the world. We should take an
active part in international affairs to foster a sound external
environment for the development of our respective countries and, in the
meantime, make due contributions to world peace and development," he said.
The Chinese parliamentarian leader gave suggestions on the issue. All
countries should adhere to the universally recognized international law
and the basic norms of international relations. Uphold multilateralism,
promote democratization of international relations and safeguard the
right of all countries to equal participation in international affairs.
Seek resolution of disputes and conflicts through peaceful means like
dialogue, consultation and negotiation. Endeavor to ease the imbalance in
development and establish an open, equitable and rules-based multilateral
trade system. Acknowledge the differences in cultural tradition and
values and advocate mutual respect, learning from each other and common
development in the cultural field.
Cheng said China is a member of the international community and its
interests are connected with the interests of other countries.
"We are ready to make continuous efforts with the international
community, the member states of the IPU included, to safeguard world
peace and promote common development," he concluded.
The IPU, the world organization of parliaments normally holds its
assemblies twice a year, once in a designated host country among its
members and once at its headquarters in Geneva.
About 1,500 legislators from around the world are meeting in Kenya this
week for broad discussions on weapons proliferation, women's rights and
global environmental issues.
