China keeps low profile over Asian Cup

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-07-06 08:43

China is not the strongest team in its group and will try its best to
qualify for the knock-out stage, said team spokesman Dong Hua.

"China is not the strongest, but also not the weakest team in the group,"
said Dong after Chinese national soccer team arrived in Kuala Lumpur.

"Iran is a very strong team, and so is Uzbekistan. Malaysia is the
co-host," he said.

Apart from midfielder Shao Jiayi who caught a cold the day before, the
team is prepared for the matches ahead, he noted.

Chinese players arrived at Kuala Lumpur airport at around 4:30 in the
afternoon, including captain Zheng Zhi, Sun Jihai of English club
Manchester City.

China will play against Malaysia in its opening match on July 10.

Chinese Mandarin - 30 Afghans killed, wounded in airstrikes

WORLD / Middle East

30 Afghans killed, wounded in airstrikes

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-30 20:21

An Afghan boy cries after his two uncles were killed as his father is
detained during a U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troop raid in Khogyani
district of Nangarhar province, east of Kabul, Afghanistan on Friday,
June 29, 2007. [AP]

KABUL, Afghanistan - US-led coalition airstrikes in southern Afghanistan
left at least 30 people, including women and children, killed or wounded,
an official said Saturday.

Taliban fighters tried to ambush a joint US-Afghan military convoy in
Helmand province's Gereshk district late Friday before fleeing into a
nearby village for cover, said Mohammad Hussein, the provincial police
chief.

Airstrikes targeted the militants in the village of Hyderabad, said Dur
Ali Shah, the mayor of Gereshk.

Shah said 30 to 35 people were killed or wounded but he could not provide
an exact breakdown. Villagers reported casualty tolls far higher than 30
but those figures were not immediately corroborated by officials. Six
houses also were destroyed during the clash, he said.

"Right now we do not know the number of Taliban casualties," Shah said.

Maj. John Thomas, a spokesman for NATO's International Security
Assistance Force, said there are ongoing NATO operations in the region
and that there has been several engagements with Taliban fighters.

"We're investigating further to see what other casualties there might
have been there," he said.

Civilians deaths caused by US and NATO-led troops have infuriated Afghans
and prompted President Hamid Karzai to publicly condemn foreign forces
for carelessness and viewing Afghan lives as "cheap."

He urged restraint and better coordination of military operations with
the Afghan government, while also blaming Taliban for using civilians as
human shields.

Violence has soared in Afghanistan with more than 2,800 people, mostly
militants, killed in fighting this year, according to an Associated Press
tally of figures from Western military and Afghan officials.

A count by the United Nations and an umbrella organization of Afghan and
international aid groups shows the number of civilians killed by
international forces was slightly greater than the number killed by
insurgents in the first half of the year.

An AP count based on figures from Afghan and international officials
found that militants killed 178 civilians in attacks through June 23 and
that Western forces killed 203. The US and NATO say they don't have
civilian casualty figures.

In the southern Helmand province's Sangin district, NATO-led and Afghan
troops clashed with Taliban fighters on Friday, leaving 15 militants
dead, said Ezatullah Khan, a district chief.

There were no casualties among NATO and Afghan troops, Khan said.

Also in the south, two suspected Taliban were killed while trying to
place a homemade bomb on the side of a road in Zhari district of Kandahar
province on Friday, said Ghulam Rasool, the district's police chief.

Three children were also killed Friday and another wounded when an old
rocket they were playing with exploded in Zabul province in the south,
said Gen. Yaqoub Khan, the provincial police chief.

Yao still out of action

(CRI)
Updated: 2007-06-26 08:27

Houston Rockets player Yao Ming will be absent from a Chinese squad which
will compete at a tournament in Las Vegas next month, the event will also
feature some NBA sides.

An official from the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), Hu Jinshi,
said on Monday that the possibility of Yaos participation in the event
is close to zero.

Yaos absence is a result of his long-term injury, said a report on the
website Sina.com.

Sources with the Rockets say it may take the small giant about half a
year for treatment and recovery from his shoulder injury. However, no
source has yet confirmed whether the star player will require surgery.

Director of the CBA, Li Yunwei, revealed Yao is still undergoing training
in the US as arranged by his US club. He further declined to give a
time-frame for Yaos return to the Chinese national team.

Yaos absence also leaves a lingering shadow over Chinas mens
basketball teams preparations for the Beijing Olympics next year.

The national teams head coach Jonas Kazlauskas complained that games
without Yao Ming will be less constructive than expected in terms of the
teams Olympic preparation.

Nearly 30 warm-up games are on the agenda for the Chinese basketball team
in 2007, and the CBA has already shortened the 2006-07 basketball season
to leave enough time for the teams tune-up.

The Chinese team is scheduled to set off for the Unites States on Friday.
The tournament, also attended by NBA sides Memphis Grizzlies, Sacremento
Kings, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, is to
kick-off in mid-July.

SEOUL, South Korea - Chief US nuclear envoy Christopher Hill arrives in
Pyongyang in the first high-level visit by a US official there in more
than 4 1/2 years.

North Korea's US Affairs Department Director Li Gun upon his arrival at
Pyongyang airport June 21, 2007. [Xinhua]

Assistant US Secretary of State Christopher Hill's trip came ahead of the
expected resumption of six-nation talks next month following the
resolution of a key financial dispute that had blocked progress.

APTN footage showed Hill arriving at Pyongyang's airport in a small jet
in a steady downpour. His five-member delegation was met by Ri Gun, the
North's deputy nuclear negotiator.

"We want to get the six-party process moving," Hill, standing under an
umbrella, said in the APTN film. "We hope that we can make up for some of
the time that we lost this spring and so I'm looking forward to good
discussions about that."

Hill and Ri were shown walking together and chatting in a friendly manner.

"We're all waiting for you," Ri said. In response, Hill said he "got the
message on Monday and we had to work fast to find an airplane,"
suggesting the visit was hastily arranged and based on a North Korean
invitation.

North Korea, which carried out its first nuclear test explosion in
October, promised in a landmark agreement struck in February with China,
Japan, Russia, South Korea and the US that it would shut down its nuclear
reactor at Yongbyon by mid-April.

Progress was stalled by the financial dispute between Pyongyang and
Washington involving $25 million in alleged North Korean illicit funds.
That dispute was resolved in recent days, and although North Korea still
hasn't shut the reactor, it invited UN monitors next week to discuss a
shutdown.

Last year, North Korea openly invited Hill to visit the country, but
Washington did not accept the offer.

Hill planned consultations Thursday and Friday on the nuclear issue "to
move the process forward," the US State Department said in a statement.

Visits to the North by high-ranking US officials are extremely rare. The
US and North Korea do not have formal diplomatic relations. Hill's
unexpected trip was the first since one by his predecessor as assistant
secretary in October 2002.

The highest-ranking US official ever to visit North Korea was former
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who met the North Korea's leader
Kim Jong Il in late 2000.

Hill was to meet with North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan to
discuss advancing the six-party process, the State Department said. Hill
was to return to South Korea on Friday and then travel on to Japan on
Saturday.

South Korea welcomed Hill's visit as "efforts to build mutual trust"
between the US and the North, and expressed hope that it would prompt
concrete steps toward North Korea's denuclearization.

ROME, June 13 - Italian champions Inter Milan have signed Honduran
striker David Suazo from Serie A rivals Cagliari, the president of
Cagliari said on Wednesday.

"Inter have made a great buy. At Inter, Suazo will be their first choice.
The rest will come after. He's a great player and a great professional,"
Massimo Cellino told Italian radio station Radio Radio.

Suazo joined Cagliari from Olimpia of Honduras in 1999. The Sardinian
club were relegated to the second division Serie B at the end of his
first season, but Suazo scored 19 goals to help them win promotion back
to the top flight during the 2003-04 campaign.

Since then, the 27-year-old Honduran international has developed into one
of the most dangerous strikers in Italy.

In the 2005-06 season he scored 22 Serie A goals for Cagliari, breaking
the club record of 21 league goals in a season that former Italy
international Gigi Riva set in 1970.

At the Italian Football Oscars in January this year, he shared the award
for best foreign player in Serie A with AC Milan's Brazilian playmaker
Kaka.

Chinese Class - Bush, Putin ready for one-on-one meeting

WORLD / Europe

Bush, Putin ready for one-on-one meeting

Updated: 2007-06-07 14:46

ROSTOCK, Germany - Is a tense meeting in the cards for President Bush and
Russian President Vladimir Putin? "Could be," even Bush admits.

US President George Bush and his wife Laura arrives the official G8
dinner at the Hohen Luckow castle near Heiligendamm, Germany, Wednesday,
June 6, 2007. [AP]

The leaders saw each other Wednesday night for the first time since their
dispute over putting a US missile defense system in Eastern Europe flared
into Cold War-style rhetoric and sent Russia-US relations sliding to
their lowest point in decades.

Bush and Putin are attending a summit of the world's eight major
industrialized democracies, which opened with an evening of cocktails,
dinner and entertainment with spouses at a rural manor.

Their meeting Thursday held the promise of less crystal, more candor.

Washington is getting fed up with Putin for overseeing what the US
perceives as an era of muzzled dissent.

The stepped-up criticism from Bush came as Moscow offers strong
objections to the proposed missile shield.

Bush administration officials have tried to lower Russia's anger.

Even Putin's warning that a new shield could require Russia to retarget
missiles toward Europe earned only a muted reaction from Bush. He
dismissed Putin's bellicose talk, suggesting it could be bluster intended
more for internal political consumption in Russia, which holds elections
next year.

There are other items on the disagreement list, notably Russia's
unhappiness with US support for independence for the breakaway Serbian
province of Kosovo. Russia bristles at what it sees as US meddling in its
affairs and its traditional sphere of influence.

Moscow has shown more willingness of late to help the West take on Iran
over its nuclear program. Washington wants to preserve this momentum.

"It's a long agenda, reflecting I think the many areas in which the
United States and Russia cooperate," said Stephen Hadley, Bush's national
security adviser. "They will also, of course, talk about the issues where
the United States and Russia do not, at this point, see eye to eye."

The Russians projected a similar air. They said the open hostility was
part of a constructive relationship. Yet they reaffirmed disagreements
with Washington's view of Russian democracy and dissatisfaction with its
arguments for the shield.

Putin next month will become the first world leader during Bush's
presidency to come to the Bush family's summer compound on the Maine
coast. The two - once so close in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001,
attacks - last met in November, in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Bush was beginning his day with a farewell meeting with departing British
Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Blair, the president's closest ally in Europe, is holding out hope that
he can bridge an impasse between Bush and some of the other countries
over climate change. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as summit host, is
pushing for specific, binding targets for reducing carbon emissions; Bush
is against them.

Chinese Online Class - Global warming-hurricane link debated

WORLD / America

Global warming-hurricane link debated

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-05-28 11:30

Washington - Climate scientists agree there have been a lot of strong
hurricanes lately. They agree that warmer seas have given these storms
some extra punch. But they disagree how much global warming is to blame.

Katrina went though New Orleans, September 12, 2005. [Reuters/file]

With the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season about to begin, the controversy
over the role of climate change in boosting hurricane intensity is a
matter for debate among the researchers who watch the water and the
clouds and work to figure out what makes the worst storms so furious.

"As far as I can tell, there is no dispute that higher sea temperatures
mean more energy for these storms to feed on," said Kevin Trenberth of
the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, part
of a consortium of US universities.

Trenberth said the next logical question is, how have sea surface
temperatures changed over the last 30 years or so, "and that's where the
global warming aspects come in and that's where some of the dispute seems
to lie."

Trenberth is convinced that global warming is a major factor in spawning
the kinds of intense hurricanes that kill, and he is hardly alone.

The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which set out the
consequences of global warming in a series of reports this year, said
future hurricanes and typhoons will probably be more intense as tropical
seas continue to heat up.

The world panel also drew a line between warmer seas and the release of
greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from human sources like factories,
vehicles and coal-fired power plants.

However, Chris Landsea of the US government's National Hurricane Center
in Miami considers climate change a minor piece of the puzzle of
hurricane intensity compared with long-term climate cycles that can last
for decades.

How Much Impact From Global Warming?

When it comes to the relationship between hurricane strength and global
warming, "the important question is not, is there an impact, but how much
of an impact," Landsea said in a telephone interview. "When you look at
all of the studies ... it's a pretty tiny sensitivity."

Landsea said hurricanes get about 2 percent stronger for every rise of 1
degree F (.55C) in the sea surface temperature.

Sea surface temperatures have risen an average of about that much in the
tropical Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico -- where big
hurricanes are nourished -- over the last 100 years, and only about half
of that increase is due to human-caused global warming, he said.

He said that 1 percent difference in intensity, gauged by the force of
the storm winds, makes little difference, even in a storm with the
devastating strength of 2005's Katrina, a top-ranked Category 5 hurricane.

"Consider that we can only estimate winds to the nearest 5 miles an hour
here at the hurricane center and when you get to Category 4 or 5, you're
really making a guess to the nearest 10 miles an hour," Landsea said. "A
1- or 2-mile an hour change is so tiny you can't even measure it."

But Trenberth noted that global climate change was a big factor in
driving the spike in sea surface warming in 2005, a hurricane season that
broke records for its intensity.

Tropical sea temperatures were up by 1.6 degrees F (.92 degree C) in
2005. "That's way higher than the next highest on record for the period,"
Trenberth said. Global warming accounted for about half of that rise, he
said.

By contrast, the Pacific Ocean phenomenon El Nino accounted for .38
degrees F (.2 degrees C) of tropic sea warming that year, and a long-term
cycle of warming and cooling known as the Atlantic Multi-Decadal
Oscillation accounted for .19 degrees F (.1 degree C), according to
Trenberth.

'Global Warming Doesn't Go Away'

"The key thing about global warming is it doesn't go away," Trenberth
said. "It provides a background level (of warming), and the natural
fluctuations can be thought of as occurring on top of it."

Kerry Emanuel, a climate scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, stated plainly that human-caused global warming contributes
to hurricane intensity.

"There has been a large upswing in the frequency of Atlantic hurricanes,
beginning in 1995," Emanuel said on his Web site,
http://wind.mit.edu/~emanuel/anthro2.htm. "This corresponds to an upswing
in tropical North Atlantic sea surface temperature, which is very likely
a response to increasing anthropogenic (human-caused) greenhouse gases."

Emanuel said there was no evidence that natural cycles or regional
Atlantic climate phenomena are affecting sea surface temperatures, which
have an impact on hurricanes.

John Holdren, a climate scientist at Harvard University and chairman of
the board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,
said he found Emanuel's work extremely persuasive -- a "smoking gun"
supporting the impact of climate change on hurricanes.

The matter is not settled. A study published in Nature last week said
hurricanes over the past 5,000 years appear to have been controlled more
by El Nino and an African monsoon than warm local sea surface
temperatures.

Chinese Class - Bush White House fires back at Jimmy Carter

Bush White House fires back at Jimmy Carter

CRAWFORD, Texas - The White House on Sunday fired back at former
President Jimmy Carter, calling him "increasingly irrelevant" a day after
Carter described George W. Bush's presidency as the worst in history in
international relations.

Former President Jimmy Carter speaks about his controversial book
'Palestine Peace Not Apartheid' at Jewish-founded Brandeis University in
Waltham, Massachusetts January 23, 2007. [Reuters]

Carter, a Democrat, said on Saturday in an interview with the Arkansas
Democrat-Gazette that "as far as the adverse impact on the nation around
the world, this administration has been the worst in history."

White House spokesman Tony Fratto had declined to react on Saturday but
on Sunday fired back.

"I think it's sad that President Carter's reckless personal criticism is
out there," Fratto told reporters. "I think it's unfortunate. And I think
he is proving to be increasingly irrelevant with these kinds of comments."

Carter has been an outspoken critic of Bush, but the White House has
largely refrained from attacking him in return. Sunday's sharp response
marks a departure from the deference that sitting presidents
traditionally have shown their predecessors.

In the newspaper interview, Carter said Bush had taken a "radical
departure from all previous administration policies" with the Iraq war.

"We now have endorsed the concept of pre-emptive war where we go to war
with another nation militarily, even though our own security is not
directly threatened, if we want to change the regime there or if we fear
that some time in the future our security might be endangered," Carter
said.

In a separate BBC interview, Carter also denounced the close relationship
between Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"Abominable. Loyal, blind, apparently subservient," Carter said when
asked how he would characterize Blair's relationship with Bush.

"I think that the almost undeviating support by Great Britain for the
ill-advised policies of President Bush in Iraq have been a major tragedy
for the world," Carter said.

Carter, who was president from 1977-1981 and won the 2002 Nobel Peace
Prize for his charitable work, was an outspoken opponent of the invasion
of Iraq before it was launched in 2003.
